Will Atiku Abubakar be the next president of Nigeria, succeeding the ailing President Buhari?

By Al Musasia, Lagos, Nigeria –

Nigeria is about to elect its next president in a highly anticipated election pitying the former Vice president Atiku Abubakar against the incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari. Atiku Abubakar was President Olusegun Obasanjo’s vice president. It’s alleged that Atiku fell out with President Obasanjo after the later attempted to change the constitution in order to run for the third term.

During the confrontation, it’s alleged that Obasanjo told Atiku that he left power 20 years ago at that time, when Robert Mugabe, Hosni Mubarak and Muamar Ghadafi were in power and came back, served another 8 years and they were still in power. He argued that he deserved another term as president upon which Vice president Atiku told him off that Nigeria was not Libya or Zimbabwe.

This will the fifth attempt at the presidency by the former vice president. He is considered the strongest challenger to Muhammadu Buhari. They both come from the Muslim North. It remains to be seen whether Nigerians want a change of guard replacing the ailing Buhari or maintain the status quo.

Defeating incumbents in Africa is always a challenge. However, considering that Good luck Jonathan was an incumbent and when he lost to President Buhari, then Buhari better not seat pretty.
