DP Ruto Loses Grip on Coast Following Meeting Between Uhuru and Joho

Details have emerged on an early morning meeting held between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho at State house Mombasa.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Joho closed ranks in yet another sign of changing political realignments.

The two bitter political rivals buried the hatchet after a closed door meeting.

In May last year, Joho was a thorn in the flesh, often rubbing the government the wrong way.

The Monday meeting was made public by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena, who says the President also discussed the Kibarani dumpsite standoff with the Governor.

The President also agreed to Joho’s request for a regeneration project in Mombasa, similar to one granted to Nairobi County.

However, political  details of the dawn meeting which was also attended by Environment CS Keriako Tobiko and his Tourism counterpart Najib Balala remain scanty.

Both President Kenyatta and CS Balala have had a strained relationship with the Mombasa Governor but the meeting held on Monday morning is reported to have gone on well and laid a foundation for a joint collaboration.

Recently, Joho took a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto saying leaders tainted by allegations of graft should be rejected in 2022.

Joho’s meeting with Kenyatta comes at a time when the Coastal political terrain is undergoing a transformation of sorts.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi and Malindi lawmaker Aisha Jumwa appear to have changed tune to now support DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

After the meeting at State House, Joho, Balala, and Tobiko addressed a joint meeting at the Mombasa Governor’s office.

The Mombasa county boss could not hide his joy as he heaped praise on President Kenyatta’s unity deal with his party leader Raila Odinga.

“I told Najib (Balala) that for the last four years, I was not sure whether I am a governor or just a layman because I did not enjoy being a governor. Now I am already feeling that we are able to make a difference and enjoy our offices,” Joho said of his newfound partnership with the national government.
