Police Crack Whip on Eastleigh Cartels Protected by Hon Duale

Police yesterday compounded 26,000 bags of contraband sugar at a go-down on 1st Avenue Eastleigh in Nairobi.

CID officers from Parklands sealed off the warehouse since this was the third consignment of sugar to be found in the area in a month.

On June 4, police discovered more than 20,000 bags of contraband brown sugar in Eastleigh section Three.

Cooking oil was also confiscated by officers who had been tipped off.

On June 15, Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati claimed that a “well-known parliamentarian” was behind the sugar impounded in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Arati said politicians cannot take advantage of communities and that “we would rather eliminate individuals with the intention of killing us all.”

When police began the crackdown on contraband sugar, Garissa MP Aden Duale went on a defensive mode claiming Somali community were being targeted.

He accused Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Treasury boss Henry Rotich knew the real culprits behind importation of poisonous sugar and instead frustrating small scale traders in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

But Government Spokesperson Erick Kiraithe would hear none of it.

“Any political opinion that suggests that you have gone for criminal A but we think you should have gone for criminal B and C is diversionary, useless and a wasted effort.

“If there are politicians who know criminals who ought to have been targeted, they should know that going to public channels and trying to seek sympathy by protecting what they think are their constituencies is not useful.”
