CJ Maraga’s Ebbing Glory as Cartels Wine and Dine Magistrates Under His Watch

The Judiciary which is led by Chief Justice David Maraga has come to under sharp criticism after allowing a state agency to facilitate a cocktail party with its officials at a time its top management was fighting numerous court cases.

Kenya Power Managing Director Ken Tarus reportedly sponsored drinks and snacks for magistrates gathering on Friday in Naivasha at the Great Rift Valley Lodge.

Dr. Tarus is facing civil suits in connection with overstretched electricity bills by Kenya Power.

Tarus, the General Manager and the company legal team reportedly flew in on Friday and addressed the colloquium for close to three hours and paid for the treat.

A senior magistrate who attended the cocktail party confirmed to a local daily that they had indeed been given the best of a catch from the Kenya Power management having sponsored the party.

He declined to be named as he feared reprisals from top officials at the Judiciary.

While the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) refuted the claims of having allowed Kenya Power foot their bills, the company confirmed that they had indeed treated the magistrates as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Kenya Power is said to have reached out to JTI to be allowed in for a session with the magistrates on their ongoing transmitters and anti-vandalism outreach campaign.

Dr. Tarus on Saturday confirmed that indeed they held the session and had deliberations on legal matters and issues affecting Kenya Power’s legal rights.

“The objective of the engagement with the magistrates was to sensitize the Judiciary officers on the impact of vandalism and other offenses in the Energy Act,” stated Dr. Tarus.

Justice Otieno Odek, the Director at JTI held that the reports that the officials held a cocktail party with the magistrates were not true.

“It is true that we hosted Dr. Tarus at the colloquium.., It was about the role of Kenya Power in terms of outages and electrocution. There is nothing like Kenya Power hosting magistrates for a cocktail party. It is not true.” refuted Odek, stating that the meeting was on a formal invitation.
