Meeting Uhuru was Painful but I had to do it – Raila.

By Kevin Rop—

NASA leader Raila Odinga has this weekend broke the silence on his move to engage President Uhuru Kenyatta. According to, Raila said that their unity pact was in the best interest to the country.

Raila thanked his Kisumu supporters for their support and endorsement of his unity pact with President Uhuru Kenyatta. He sent a message to his largest support base via his Twitter account upon returning from his Nyanza tour that started on Friday. He wrote:

“I wish to thank the people of Kisumu for a very warm welcome and strongly endorsing the national reconciliation process that we are undertaking for the sake of our beloved nation. Asanteni sana (Thank you very much).”

Hon Odinga said that it was a decision he had to take despite it being a painful one due to his reflection on the challenges facing the country.

He promised to use dialogue with to bring an end to tribalism, corruption and electoral injustices.

“We agreed to address nine key points with the Head of State. This will ensure political working arrangements bringing together Luos, Kalenjins and Kikuyus who have been at loggerheads for long.”

He also said this earlier on Saturday when he addressed Kisii County leaders at Kisii Sports Club before the burial ceremony of university don, Alloys Oeri who was the uncle to Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache MP.

He told the politicians that they have deliberately been silent about the meeting with Uhuru to judge the public’s reception of it. He said he is further pleased with the results of the MOU terming the reception impressive.

Together with Uhuru, he said that they would engage more on how to heal the country. Raila also dismissed claims that his sudden cooperation with Uhuru Kenyatta threatened to split the NASA coalition, maintaining that the coalition was still intact. He however, did not speak about the recent coup against Hon Wetangula in the Senate.

Meanwhile a section of Jubilee politicians have urged the party to tread carefully in their dealings with Raila Odinga. They claimed that Raila is fickle and cannot be trusted. They spoke on Friday at an Education Day event in Chesumei constituency in Nandi County.

Led by Nandi County Senator, Samson Kiprotich Cherargei and Kapenguria legislator, Samwel Moroto, the politicians said Raila is unpredictable and his moves should be watched carefully. Moroto said Raila’s entry into Jubilee could distort the party’s political formation in the run up to the 2022 election.
