Wetang’ula ousted

Moses Wetang’ula, the senator minority leader has threatened a noisy and messy NASA divorce. This is following reports of plans to remove him from his position, with Siaya Senator James Orengo as his replacement. This only serves as another blow to the unity of the National Super Alliance (NASA). Moreover, this comes only days after the unity truce between President Uhuru and NASA leader Raila.

According to a pre-election agreement between the co-principals, the dissolution is only possible with the opting out of at least three parties. In the event that Wiper, ANC and Ford Kenya opt out, the alliance would officially be over. This, according to political analysts, would only be an advantage to Raila’s party. This is because the agreement excludes both Raila and ODM  from fielding a presidential candidate in the 2022 General Election.

Suspension pending removal

Wetang’ula also dismissed any notion ODM holds a majority in NASA. He further insisted that the parties recognized in the Senate are the Opposition coalition, Jubilee, KANU, Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) and one independent member.

The Senate speaker Ken Lusaka spoke in acknowledgement of the senate’s decision as well as the number of standing orders. He however, insisted that Wetang’ula’s removal will not take effect. This is until a new senator is elected and approved by the required standing orders.
